Mexican food is all the go in Melbourne and it sometimes feels like there is a new Mexican place opening every other week. In a last ditch dinner before Christmas, a few vegan friends and I decided to check out Touché Hombre’s ‘LIVIN’ ON THE VEDGE’ Monday nights.

We started with a jug of Sangria and beer while we tried to make our mind up about what to eat. There were lots of vegan options, in fact so many that we got that “OMG I am a vegan with too many choices on the menu” paralysis and we decided to just let the waiter bring us some dishes and then we’d decide if we needed more or should stop.

Here’s what we ate…

A Special Christmas Eve Salad

This was a wonderful combination of lightly grilled quartered cos lettuce with golden beetroot, peaches, julienned jicama, radish, orange segments and pomegranate with a chilli and coriander dressing. Absolutely delicious.

A Plate of Dips

Three dips,  a guacamole with radish and pomegranate, a blackbean and corn dip and a unusual spicy pumpkin seed and peanut dip. Served with fresh tortilla chips and pico di gallo.

Corn Tostadas

Sweet corn, black bean, and Tajin (a chilli, lime and salt seasoning) with a chunk of avocado and fresh lime. I loved this one, the creamed corn was a beautiful contrast to the earthy black beans which were given more kick with the seasoning and fresh lime.

Sweet potato tacos

Caramelised sweet potato, creamed corn, spring onions and mint.  Beautiful soft warm taco with a sensational filling. I could have eaten several. So far the best!

Tofu Tacos

Charred tofu, chimmi churri mayo, carrot and radish salad with coriander. In heaven by now. These were a close competitor for best…

Mushroom Tostada

Blue corn, mushroom, tomato and pinto bean puree.  The flavours were good on this, but it was unexpectedly cold!

Sadly due to a Christmas delivery issue,  the ingredients for the vegan dessert had not arrived. 🙁  It was to have been a VEGAN PEANUT PARFAIT with CHOC CHILLI COOKIE!!!

Oh well, I will just have to go back to get my hands (and tastebuds) on that dessert.

The place was packed. Even so we managed to get straight in, so I’m hoping it was a pre Christmas thing, not a sign that there will be 3 hour waits to get in soon.

The food was great. The staff were great. Definitely I will be back.
