straight up

I made a quick trip to Hobart for a couple of days last week to visit a friend. My first stop after an early flight was brunch at Straight Up in the city.
Straight Up is an all vegetarian cafe. Coeliacs will be happy to know that it is also completely gluten free. The space is as hip as anything you’ll find in Melbourne, light, airy and spacious. The menu has about half vegan options and many of the other options are veganisable.
I chose a potato patty with caramelised onions, crispy kale, pickled cabbage, grilled king mushrooms, harissa and pinenuts. A delicious combination of soft, hot, cold, spicy, crispy, salty, savoury, sweet and sour. If I had a small criticism to make, the pickled cabbage was just a little bit too vinegary for my taste.
My friend chose the chocolate waffles with caramelised bananas and peanut butter icecream. I thought the waffles could have been a bit lighter in texture, I am assuming this is as a result of being gluten free.
These are just minor quibbles, the food was really good, creative and delicious. I’d happily go back. Coffee was also excellent.
