eat all the smith & deli sandwiches – #16, free willy 2

Day 16.

With so many unusual sandwiches on the deli menu, the Free Willy and the Free Willy 2 were low on my list. I ate the FW2 because I had committed to eating them all, rather than because it leapt out at me and said “Eat me!” I admit I was wrong. So wrong.

It is one of a pair with tuna salad. I’d decided that I was only going to eat one of the pair. The Free Willy comes in a sandwich with lettuce. When faced with a choice between that, and its partner that comes toasted with melted cheese, it was no contest.

I’m SO glad I didn’t skip it. This sandwich is awesome, right up there with my more complex favourites so far, the Home Alone and the Little Havana.

The tuna salad is a delight with onion, dill, parsley, celery and mayo flavours mixed into the “tuna”.

Imagine this.  If you have ever eaten the tuna croquettes at Smith & Daughters, this reminds me of a giant tuna croquette. Crispy on the outside, soft and creamy on the inside. It is perfect in both taste and texture and utterly delicious.

The cheese used in the sandwich is normally the Bio cheddar, but I asked for the house made mozzarella instead as I am not a huge fan of Bio. It was a great combination, with the melted mozzarella combining with the mayo in the salad, making the filling soft and creamy…just like the croquettes. I can NEVER eat at Smith & Daughters without getting a croquette. Now I just need to head to the deli and order a sandwich to get that delicious experience whenever I want.
