eat all the smith & deli sandwiches – #09 – the godfather

Day 9.
Wow! This is a chilli sandwich with major impact. I think it is misnamed. It should be called “Burning the !*&% out of Your Mouth and Loving it”. It makes the Temple of Doom sandwich look wimpy.
It is chiili packed to the hilt. Hot chilli salami, fresh ground chillies, jalapenos, which weren’t on the board in the list of ingredients, but hell, the sandwich obviously needed some more heat. Plus some mozzarella, basil and roasted red pepper to cool things down a bit.
Mine came toasted.
I had bought a pie as well, a creamy chicken and bacon number. I had been going to take the pie home for dinner. I took one bite of the sandwich and realised there was no way I was going to be able to eat it without a beer. So I headed home, heated and ate the pie for lunch (it was great) and saved the sandwich for later.
At dinner time, armed with a beer for the defence of my tastebuds, I reheated the sandwich in a sandwich press and began with a tentative bite. It took me a while to eat it, there is no way I could have scoffed it down quickly, it is just way too hot. I needed breathing space, and beer, between bites. Never mind the fact that I get chilli hiccups. But underneath all the heat there is great flavour.
If you are not a chilli fiend then this isn’t the sandwich for you. I love chilli and it was almost too much for me. Just lucky there was beer to the rescue. I now have hiccups.

see this is way too hot for me and I wouldn’t enjoy it but strangely I find myself wanting to try it without the jalapenos and ground chili. I’ll eat the hot salami!
It is the ground red chilli that is the killer in this sandwich. I discovered that when I ate another sandwich that uses the salami (review pending!). Without the ground chillies I think it would be fine.
For me, this one was a bit too sour and spicy, but I’d definitely have it again when in the mood for something HOT.
