eat all the smith and deli sandwiches – #7 egg mcmartinez

Day 7.
I have to confess that in my pre vegan days, a McMuffin at Maccas was an occasional guilty pleasure when I was in a hurry. Needless to say I haven’t eaten one for quite a while.
So I was delighted to find the playfully named Egg McMartinez on the menu at Smith & Deli. For those that don’t know, the chef and co-owner’s surname is Martinez.
I grabbed one of these and a coffee for breakfast on my way to one of my early morning volunteering days. I do some occasional driving for Fareshare to rescue otherwise wasted food that would go to landfill. I also do a regular shift cooking in the kitchen.
The Egg McMartinez consists of a tofu egg, complete with a slightly sulphurous eggy yolk, scarily real looking vegan bacon and Bio cheese on a toasted english muffin. The muffins are a perfect size for eating on the run in the car.
This is pretty good, but it isn’t my favourite, mostly because I am not a huge fan of Bio cheese. But the trip down memory lane was fun. Pretty much the same as Maccas really, but without feeling sordid. Oh and it tastes better!
All that’s missing is the drive through.

I haven’t tried this yet and it’s on the list. I wonder if they’ll change up the Biocheese when the new cheese flavours are released.
I’m one of the outliers on Bio Cheese. Most people seem to like it. It is OK, but not stellar.
The Egg McMartinez is one of my very favourite things from S & D. Now I’ve tried the (rightly) famous croissants there is a battle for top spot. 🙂
I like it but isn’t in my top 5 or even 10. But you know how I feel about Bio Cheese! The croissants win hands down for me. 🙂
This was on my list to have for one my breakfast stops there. Though I am not a huge fan of biocheese either because too much coconut oil gross death.
I am intrigued by the egg!
this is the one I really want to try and I love biocheese so it sounds great to me – just need to get to fitzroy – sigh
This is my fave thing so far! Delicious!
I’ve never had a real mcmuffin – I never really liked egg or bacon as a child – so I jumped at the chance to try this, and thought it was really tasty. I’m with you though, not the biggest biocheese fan – I find it kind of tasteless. For melted things, daiya is my fave now 🙂
