- 250 g yellow split peas
- 1 tsp turmeric
- 4 cups water
- 4 garlic cloves peeled
- 2 cm piece of ginger peeled
- salt
- ½ tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 tsp black mustard seeds
- 8 curry leaves
- 2 tsp cumin seeds
- 2 dried chillies
- ½ tsp chilli powder
- 1 large chopped tomato
- tamarind paste or lemon juice
- coriander leaves for garnish
- Wash and drain the split peas.
- Add to a large saucepan with 4 cups of water and the turmeric and cook until tender.
- By this time the water should have reduced.
- Pound the garlic and ginger into a paste with a pinch of salt in a mortar and pestle or chop very finely into a paste with a knife.
- In a small pan heat the oil and add all the spices and the garlic and ginger paste and fry briefly until they smell good.
- Add the spices and the oil to the split peas and stir.
- Season with salt to taste.
- Add the chopped tomato and cook for another 10 minutes.
- Add some tamarind paste or lemon juice to give it a slightly sour taste.
- Garnish with fresh coriander.
